Duties of Dental Assistants

A Dental Assistants job is a very versatile one. Dental Assistants are trained to do a wide range of jobs so that they can provide the necessary assistance to Dentists and Dental Hygienists. Though the job encompasses a variety of areas, the exact job differs from one state to the next depending upon the state regulations as well as the way operations are set up in that particular dental facility and the kind of dental facility.

  

Dental Assistants do several duties in typical dental office. They setup instrument trays and sterilize equipments. To provide quality service to patients is an important part of a dental office and dental assistants manage this task by cleansing and sterilizing the various instruments. Because Dental Assistants help with getting all the necessary instruments together and ready to be used wherever the dental procedure is due to take place, the Dentist or hygienist can perform the dental procedure smoothly without having to look for necessary instruments all over the place.

Dental Assistants are sometimes needed to remain with Dentists or Hygienists during the dental procedure. They do the task of suctioning the mouth and are responsible for handing the equipments to other staff throughout the operation. Sometimes they may be needed to assist Dentists or Hygienists if an emergency arises. They are often required to monitor the condition of patients and their response during the procedure and can also administer local anesthetics in some cases.

Dental Assistants help patients to prepare for the dental procedure. They can encourage patient to get rid of their nervousness and help manage a better environment for patients before, during and after the procedure. They help to provide a better chair position, adjust lighting and guide patients on following the different procedures. They often keep contact with the patients for further follow up during recovery after major operations like root canals, extractions, and bridges

Dental Assistants have some common jobs in all dental office. They do X- Ray reporting and several lab procedures, they can take the cast for bridges and caps; they talk to patients about their communicable diseases and medical history and maintain the patient's records too. They offer patients valuable comfort and follow-up advice after any major procedure. Interpersonal skills play a vital role here. Patients feel comfortable with good mannered a Dental Assistant.

A Dental Assistant is trained in emergency procedures too and he is capable of dealing with patients who may be allergic to anesthetic. A Dental assistant is responsible for observing all these signs and take proper action to avoid any further complication.

Dental Assistants are trained in various procedures and as such they need to be up to date with the latest techniques and new inventions in the field of dentistry. Most dentists provide training for dental assistants in order to get the best help possible.
