Certified Dental Assistant Requirements

A Dental Assistant's job is anticipated as one of the fastest growing jobs now-a-days. Dental Assistants work under several dentist & dental hygienists who usually setup necessary training & certification free of cost for Dental Assistants. It requires certification to become a Dental Assistant and in some states a license is required. Goes without saying, Dental Assistants with certification get paid more than those Dental Assistants who don't obtain licensing.

Certified Dental Assistant Test

Dental Assistants usually have to appear for a CDA or Certified Dental Assistant test. The Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. sets the standard for this test. There are typically three segments in this CDA test. A Dental Assistant has to face 120 multiple choice questions in the first segment, which is a General Chairside written test. The second segment of the test comprises Infection Control, which consists of 100 questions. A Dental Assistant faces multiple choice questions here related to dental diseases, the risks and the cure for the diseases. The last segment is the Health & Safety portion which consists also of 100 multiple choice questions, which are based on common sense. Some Nursing Assistants choose to take the CDA test as well. That test contains 210 multiple choice questions.

Preparing for the CDA test

To prepare for the CDA test, notes & text books related to Dental Assistant program will help. Many free tests & practice sections are available on the Internet. It is wise to buy & follow a CDA guide and to make a study group with others who will also appear the CDA test. A Dental Assistant can appear the CDA test in two ways: normal written test or computerized form.

You should appear for the CDA test as soon as you have completed your Dental Assistant program. The sooner you appear the better you score. If you sit for the exam immediately after completing the Dental Assistant Program, you will not suffer for test anxiety. You will typically still be in learning mode and your memory is still fresh from all that studying. If you don't schedule for the test immediately, you are likely to forget the lessons you have learnt and you may also require practice session to refresh your on the job practice.

A certified Dental Assistant is definitely an asset. Dental Assistants with certification can perform more dental procedures than those dental assistants without certification. Some states confer extra facilities & status to Dental Assistants with certification. Another advantage is this certification exposes you to several employers who are sure to choose you over other Dental Assistants without certification. You will also be paid more and are likely to get several extra facilities. This certification increases your employment chances and gives you the edge over other Dental Assistants who are not certified.

Dental Assistants can take decision whether or not to take the CDA test as licensing is not really a requirement. Also, failure in the CDA test will not affect the career of Dental Assistant. Scheduling for the CDA test can be managed by the instructor or the State Dental Office or the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. who can guide you with materials and also in preparing for the test.
